Local Area Information

With their mild climate and relaxing atmosphere, the Isles make an ideal destination for a retreat, with stunning scenery, rich bird life and myriad wildflowers. Basking in sunshine, rising green and pleasant from the blue Atlantic Ocean, fringed by rugged cliffs and sandy beaches, they reveal their charms to those who walk the headlands, sail from island to island and take time to observe the sights, sounds and scents of the landscape.

Activities: Local boats run daily to the islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Martin's, St Agnes and Samson. Click here for more information. An alternative way to explore the islands is by Sea Safari taking in shipwrecks, sea birds and a colony of seals. Learn to Horse ride or try Windsurfing on Porthmellon beach.

If you want to explore St. Mary’s a little bit further, you may want to consider renting a bike and have it waiting for you on your arrival.  You'll be spoilt for choice with the variety of bikes and safety helmets for all ages, abilities and terrains. You can also hire bike trailers and tag-alongs if you have toddlers and small children to tow around.

Buggy Hire is available on St. Mary’s, taking the strain out of getting around the island. A golf buggy makes light work of all the sights and attractions, ensuring you can get around to see as much as possible. Please note they are not DDA compliant and age restrictions apply. Advance booking is advised.

For Arts and Culture visit Phoenix Craft Workshops, a co-operative of local artists and craftspeople working on the little Business Park at Porthmellon. Work includes paintings, printmaking, leather work, stained & fused glass, jewellery and fabric painting and printing. There is a gallery of work by more local artists upstairs. Computer and printer available for public use, or free WiFi if you have your own phone or tablet. Classes for children & adults are also available.

Just up the road you can play golf on England's most south westerly course with panoramic views across the islands.
